Needle in a Haystack Game
One needle. A whole haystack. Tap to clear, drag to explore, and zoom in to find it. Free · no download.
How to play Needle in a Haystack
- Choose Easy, Medium or Hard. A short rendering check selects the initial difficulty. Each difficulty has its own saved coins, upgrades and haystack.
- Use Rake and briefly tap fresh hay to earn one hay coin per removed straw. Dragging moves the view without clearing hay. The timer starts with your first move, or when the mower starts working.
- The level-one detector is free. Press Detector to scan the view center, then tap the hay to scan another position. Follow the cold, warm, hot or very hot signal and its compass direction. Wait for the cooldown between scans; switch back to Rake to clear.
- Buy a wider rake, improve the detector, or buy an automatic mower in the shop. A mower clears real hay while you play. Magnets unlock at heap five and collect a needle within range of a rake or mower patch.
- Clear around the silver needle, then tap it with Rake to win. Collect the bonus and choose Next haystack for a larger, harder pile. Coins and upgrades carry over. Restart heap reloads the same cleared patches; changing difficulty resumes that difficulty’s campaign.
Tips to score higher
- The free detector gives a compass direction when the needle is in range. Warm means farther away; hot means closer; very hot means you should rake nearby. Use the marked scan position as your reference.
- Zoom in when you need a closer look, then return to the overview to see what you have already searched.
- Use Full screen for more room. On phones with no native fullscreen support, the page uses an expanded view with an exit button.
- One coin is earned for each actual removed straw, including mower cuts. Already cleared ground gives no coins. From heap five, a mower helps with passive income while you search.
About Needle in a Haystack
This is an original, free browser game about the familiar idea of finding a needle in a haystack. The game, artwork and controls are built for this site; it is not a port of, or affiliated with, another game.
Opening phone difficulties contain 20,000, 50,000 and 100,000 straws; desktop difficulties contain 100,000, 250,000 and 500,000. Subsequent heaps add 18% of the opening count per heap, capped at 100,000 on phones and 500,000 on desktop. The game may lower rendering resolution when frames take too long, but never secretly reduces a heap’s displayed count.
Coins, upgrades, cleared hay and campaign progress stay in this browser, separately for each device category and difficulty. Best times are separated by hay count and upgrade loadout. The round timer pauses in the background. An owned mower earns a conservative offline coin allowance for up to two hours on return; it does not clear hay or complete heaps offline. No accounts, uploads or leaderboard servers are involved.
FAQ
Is this a free needle in a haystack game?
Yes. You can play this original game directly in your browser without paying, downloading anything or creating an account.
How do I find and pick up the needle?
Use the free Detector to scan and follow the temperature signal and compass direction. Switch to Rake, clear around the silver needle, then tap the exposed needle. Clearing alone does not finish the round. An unlocked magnet can also collect it within range of a rake or mower patch.
How much hay is there?
Opening phone difficulties contain 20,000, 50,000 and 100,000 straws; desktop difficulties contain 100,000, 250,000 and 500,000. Subsequent heaps add 18% of the opening count per heap, capped at 100,000 on phones and 500,000 on desktop. The game may lower rendering resolution when frames take too long, but never secretly reduces a heap’s displayed count.
Can I play on a phone?
Yes. Tap to clear, drag with one finger to move, and pinch with two fingers to zoom. You can also use the zoom buttons. Performance depends on your device; choose Easy if the game feels slow.
Does my best time sync between devices?
No. Best times stay in this browser, separated by device category, difficulty, hay count and upgrade loadout. Clearing site data removes them. If storage is unavailable, the game keeps progress and records for the current session only.
What happens if I switch tabs?
The round timer and visible mowing pause. Returning earns offline hay coins if you own a mower, capped at two hours and settled once. Offline coins do not clear saved hay or find needles. Your cleared patches remain.
What if copying my result fails?
The game shows the result and link in a text box that you can select and copy manually.
How do I upgrade my tools?
Each straw you actually remove earns one hay coin. Spend coins in the upgrade shop on a larger rake, better detector or automatic mower. Magnets unlock at heap five. Finding the needle awards a bonus, and upgrades carry over to the next heap. Prices rise with each tool level and scale with the starting difficulty.
Where is my progress saved?
Coins, tool levels, the current heap and cleared patches are stored in localStorage in this browser, separately for device category and difficulty. Reloading or restarting the heap does not restore paid-for hay. Progress does not sync across devices. Clearing site data deletes it. If saving fails, a Not saved message appears and you can continue for the current session.
