How to play Needle in a Haystack

  1. Choose Easy, Medium or Hard. Each has its own saved campaign. Walk with WASD / arrows or the virtual joystick, or tap the hay directly.
  2. Select Detector to scan ahead of your character. Follow its arrow, then scan closer. A cooldown message tells you when another scan is ready.
  3. Select Rake. Space / Enter or the round action button rakes ahead; taps rake exactly where you tap. Drag to explore, scroll or pinch to zoom.
  4. Clear fresh hay for coins. Open Shop to buy a wider rake, stronger detector or auto mower (available from heap 1). Magnet unlocks at heap 5.
  5. When the silver needle sparkles, tap it with Rake to finish. Your victory card shows time and heap; copy your result, check Local top 10, or start the next heap.
  6. Resume / Reload saved heap keeps your cleared hay, coins, upgrades and elapsed time. Sound and music start off; enable them when you want. Motion can be switched off.

Tips to score higher

  • The free detector gives a compass direction when the needle is in range. Warm means farther away; hot means closer; very hot means you should rake nearby. Use the marked scan position as your reference.
  • Zoom in when you need a closer look, then return to the overview to see what you have already searched.
  • Use Full screen for more room. On phones, use the exit button to return from the expanded view.
  • One coin is earned for each actual removed straw, including mower cuts. Already cleared ground gives no coins. The auto mower is available from heap one and helps with passive income while you search; magnets unlock at heap five.

About Needle in a Haystack

Find a tiny silver needle in a golden field of hay. Rake to earn coins, follow your detector and upgrade your tools as you tackle bigger heaps.

Choose Easy, Medium or Hard. Opening heaps range from 20,000 to 100,000 straws on phones and 100,000 to 500,000 on desktop. Each new heap adds more hay until you reach the limit for your device.

Your coins, upgrades, cleared hay and records stay in this browser. The timer pauses when you leave the tab. An owned mower earns offline coins for up to two hours, but you still need to search the heap to find the needle.

Try optional sound and music, or turn motion off in Settings. Check Local top 10 to see your best finds with the difficulty, heap size and tools you used.

FAQ

Is this a free needle in a haystack game?

Yes. Play directly in your browser without paying, downloading anything or creating an account.

How do I find and pick up the needle?

Use the free Detector to scan and follow the temperature signal and compass direction. Switch to Rake, clear around the silver needle, then tap the exposed needle. Clearing alone does not finish the round. An unlocked magnet can also collect it within range of a rake or mower patch.

How much hay is there?

Opening heaps contain 20,000, 50,000 or 100,000 straws on phones, and 100,000, 250,000 or 500,000 on desktop. Each new heap adds 18% of the opening count, up to 100,000 on phones or 500,000 on desktop.

Can I play on a phone?

Yes. Tap to clear, drag with one finger to move, and pinch with two fingers to zoom. You can also use the zoom buttons. Performance depends on your device; choose Easy if the game feels slow.

Does my best time sync between devices?

No. Best times stay in this browser, separated by device category, difficulty, hay count and upgrade loadout. Clearing site data removes them. If storage is unavailable, the game keeps progress and records for the current session only.

What happens if I switch tabs?

The round timer and visible mowing pause. Returning earns offline hay coins if you own a mower, capped at two hours and settled once. Offline coins do not clear saved hay or find needles. Your cleared patches remain.

What if copying my result fails?

The game shows the result and link in a text box that you can select and copy manually.

How do I upgrade my tools?

Each straw you actually remove earns one hay coin. Spend coins in the upgrade shop on a larger rake, better detector or automatic mower. Magnets unlock at heap five. Finding the needle awards a bonus, and upgrades carry over to the next heap. Prices rise with each tool level and scale with the starting difficulty.

Where is my progress saved?

Your coins, tools, current heap and cleared patches stay in this browser. Reload or resume to continue where you left off. Progress does not sync between devices, and clearing your browser’s site data deletes it. If saving fails, you will see Not saved and can keep playing until you close the game.
